A little bit about the KISS principle for our web designs. KISS is the often used acroynom for "Keep It Simple Stupid" which is a valid concept aimed towards internet viewers. KISS principles are great from a web designers point of view and, more importanly, people actually viewing a site.

Viewers coming to a site are spending their time to view whatever is offered, be it commercial or just for information, want answers in an efficient manner with easy one or two click navigation.

Unfortunately today, some "page designers" will inevitably try to stuff into one page all the tricks in the book forgetting that the end user - "the viewer" takes the hit with slow and often unwielding, little content websites.

How often have you come across sites splashed with 100's of banners, yes we have here is one that has a 199.477 download time and we have seen worse...good luck grab your coffee. ! KISS may be deemed a retro design concept - "made for people - not designers". Here is what we have attempted to do in the design of our sites...

♥ Banner and Link Pages - We try for good text links when possible and maximize at about 25 eazy to use sorted banners. No intrusive slow loading banners on our index pages.

♥ Image Trashing - removing bloat images, why use 20 if less will suffice.

♥ Indexing - with KISS, index pages are design implemented primarily for Mr Bot and with speed and content for the viewer without being overly bloated

♥ Speed - coordinated backgrounds, textual preferred links, image pre-loads, compaction and compression.

♥ Viewer Efficiency - providing relevant information for the website with one or two clicks to any target.

♥ Viewer Information - providing content and detail information throughout the sites using various methods for cleaner looking pages but still retaining all relevant content.

What is an equal banner or text links exchange?
If an exchange site demands an Index or Homepage banner is it an equal tradeoff? No.

Do people really come to your site and immediatly leave before entering by clicking on one of these banners? It is very doubtful therefore they need not be there. Why disfigure it with a bunch of non-standard banners, looks "tacky" and increases loading time? Most webmasters want a good clean look on your entry page, so why clutter it up with advertising, which in some cases will send your prospective client to another service?

Remember this. The point is, it is your advertising on a directories site that pulls in "thier" traffic, not the other way around. Without you the directory would shrivel and die quickly.

As an example, why would a screening service want an index ad location? Would it not be a more logical option to have it on your contact or booking page? Surely most clients are not booking you on your screening service, they book you because of your attributes, availability, pricing and services and not be be sent to a service to pay to be screened.

Is Your Link available to search engines? - Unfortunetly, not always. Some unscrupulous webmasters will designate a NoFollow meta tag for the page or even just some links. Example Tag Simply whats this means is your site will not get indexed by search engines.

Another example would be banners to smoke & mirror sites (review sites), most charging membership fees. Is there not a more functional place for these? On a FAQs or services page?

Options are simple; refuse the request for an index or homepage banner and add it to your links page, or find another directory that does not require top billing on your site.

Basically an empty directory, see HERE which wants top bill and intrudes on well laid out entry pages. Furthermore, many of these site use frames almost assuring your link will not be "botted" and added to any search engine.

Or why not just rename your links page as your index page - this looks like where we are heading!

Ohh and do not forget the benefits of Text Links, search engines luv them and tend to depricate banners.
